Tokyo - Itoigawa race report
RIDING TIME(タイム) 8H16M
HEART RATE AV/MAX(平均/最高心拍数) 151/181
SPEED AV(平均スピード) 34.2 KMPH
CADENCE AV(平均ケーデンス) 89RPM
TEMP MIN/AV/MAX(最低/平均/最高気温) 11/17/25C
ASCENT(勾配) 2530M
KCAL(消費カロリー) 5691
TIME guys well done in the Tokyo-Itoigawa race. It was great to do the whole race in good weather wasn’t it!?
I rode hard on a French Vitus frame, on French Look forks, on French Mavic wheels and on Japanese POWER!!! It was great to win! I was really chuffed!
My start was a 5:10 and my finish at 13:45, with a time of 8 hours 34 minutes. There was a head wind but I managed to get into a good rhythm and set a good pace on the aerobars.
You can see the Polar data on the above graph. In summary:
RIDING TIME(タイム) 8H16M
HEART RATE AV/MAX(平均/最高心拍数) 151/181
SPEED AV(平均スピード) 34.2 KMPH
CADENCE AV(平均ケーデンス) 89RPM
TEMP MIN/AV/MAX(最低/平均/最高気温) 11/17/25C
ASCENT(勾配) 2530M
KCAL(消費カロリー) 5691
I was the only じょんのびTIME rider to start at 5:10. There was nobody else to ride with, so the race turned out to be an individual TT. As planned, I rode hard from the start to try to beat my previous best times. When I made my previous best time、I rode to the 2nd checkpoint (108km) with Maru and four guys from the Nalsima team. This time I rode solo, so I was really excited to be 15 minutes up by the 2nd check point! I felt good and was riding mostly in the big chain ring. The big ring on my Vitus bike is smaller than the big ring on the bike that I usually ride. Sometimes I didn’t have enough gears on the descents but I think it was really helpful to be able to stay in the big ring for longer on the ascents
I also paid attention to my cadence. Usually in training I ride the flats at a cadence of around 90 and the climbs at around 80. In this race, in order to keep my legs fresh, I tried to ride on the flats and the climbs too at a cadence above 90. Of course my legs got tired towards the end but I think they felt better compared to previous attempts at this race.
During the race all I could think about was what to do first at the finish – drink a beer or take a bath in the onsen. It was too tough a decision to make, so after climbing off the bike I enjoyed a beer in the outside “rotenburo” bath. After 300km of racing is when a beer surely tastes best!
I had a really enjoyable couple of days. Thanks to all the じょんのび riders and support team!

Takano
Congratulations Andy!!!
I know how much you love this race, so for you to finally get the win after several years of trying (how many times?) is fantastic! Amazingly fast time too. I guess you had to stop for drinks more than usual because of the warm weather? Any drafting opportunities at all during the ride?? Say I wanted to offer you some drafting one year - how could that be done with the start time system? Anyway, I'm not sure if I would be able to keep up!
Andrew:
5 years of trying! I managed to improve on my time each year except for last year due to a puncture. I didn't do any drafting (well apart from the odd truck!). Most じょんのび guys started together (I was late applying which meant I had to take a time that was available). Generally, slow people go first (3am!) and at 10 minute intervals until the fastest go at 7am.
If you got later, you have better drafting opportuities but I guess it's hotter and there's more traffic on the road.
I do like the race as it suits me but if you'd have asked me if I loved the race while riding it, I wouldn't have said yes!
mr,andy!!!
Andrew hi! CONGRATULATIONS! Incredible feat & fruition of many trial runs in the past. We have not met I think but I'm the guy from Belgium featured under you on Kodama-san's Village Climb Series... For me it was the first time to do this Tokyo Itoigawa FR and I loved every kilometer of it. I was told I finished in 6th place but I have no way to confirm this as I was not able to attend the next day closing ceremony. If you still have the results sheet, I'd be very thankful if you can let me know my time as well as the times of 4 other team members (POSITIVO ESPRESSO) who finished together 130-ish. Hope to see you around in the hills sometime!
Kawagoe san:
Tom:
Thanks for checking out the website! I saw your details on Kodama san's webpage. Will you go to Hineomata this weekend?
I'm glad you enjoyed the race.
We got the results through today.
Do you have a fax no. I can send them to(hard copy only unfortunately)?
Times/Av Speed/Posn:
Tom 9:52:58 / 29.51 / 6
David Jacob 12:27:40 / 23.40 / 134
Litt David 18:57:43/ 23.40 / 136
Michael Kraehe 18:57:44 / 23.40 / 137
Looking forward to meeting you at the next race!
Andy
Thank you Andy...very kind of you. No unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the Hineomata event but will definitely go to Hotaka again in the fall. If it is not too much asked, could you fax the hard copy of the results to my work? FAX 03-5786-0035 This is a direct number, no need mention company name or my name. Thank you so much. I'll be participating in the Mt.Fuji HC next Sunday and in Utsukushigahara as well.
Thanks a lot again Andy...I got all the pages now. Looking at your time again...wow! this really is a tour de force especially considering you virtually had no drafting opportunities at all! Could your time be the unequaled record in the history of this event? I hope to participate again next year...if I cut my breaks at the CPs shorter and provided I stay on the right route, I am confident I can better my time to 9:30 but not much lower than that! I'm sure you had a great time celebrating this major victory! See you around soon.
