hard training 2
I don't have any races for a couple of weeks, so it's back into hard training!
On Friday I climbed Yahiko twice whilst doing intervals. (125km / 1200m)
On Saturday I took in Komura pass, Hijarigaharan highland and R405 to Matsunoyama. The average temperature was 31℃! Still I expect it will be just as hot at this month's Ishikawa and Ogawa road races, so it's good training! (167km / 2285m)
On Sunday it was ... onsen and beer! (0km / 0m)
But Maruyama san took part in the Nojiriko triathlon. (?km / ?m)
Maru we're looking forward to your race report!

Morning Andy! Looks like you got some good training in for the Ishikawa-Ogawa RR double coming up soon. Those are tough races!! I see from your HR data that you went pretty hard up the steep side of Yahiko on Friday - how was your time? Anyway, make the most of all this training time while you have it!!!
Hi Andrew,
Well done for spotting the second climb as being the "steep side"! I went up that side trying to hold my HR at 170. It's interesting to see that cadence and speed also hold pretty constant.
On the steep side, it's easy to keep HR at 170 once you have it there and it's mostly a case of actually holding back to prevent the HR going to high.
I wanted to do a 20 minute interval but got up there in 19.06. I think it's time, to quote Graeme Obree, to go for the record!
Yes, I'll take advantage of my time while I've still got it! Hope we can get a ride in this weekend......
Wait till this humidity drops a tad (could be a long wait), put that HR meter in your back pocket (or anywhere out of sight), and go for that record!!
It is a target of mine to go sub-19 by this autumn! In the meantime, I need to get that 25 sprocket onto my wheel....
Hope to ride this Saturday if I can shake this cold.
I've come down with the lurgy too!
I had a bit of a cold yesterday but decided to ride. I was feeling good on the bike and decided to go for my record on Komura Pass. I did a best time of 10.29 and carried on to take in another few big hills.
However, I paid for it today and now I'm "in bed" with a fever.
Hopefully the doctor's drugs will work and I'll be riding by the weekend!
Andy
Funny how you sometimes feel really good on the bike just as you are coming down with something.
They sure like to hand out the drugs here in Japan! I'm now popping 5-6 pills 3 times a day, but I suspect they won't do much for me.
Did a nice easy 1 hour spin early this morning to loosen up the phlegm.
I haven't come down with the lurgy, but have been taking it easy this week.
I think there is some psychological factor at play, as when you are sick, or supposed to be just pottering, the legs feel like they can do anything.
Looking forward to getting up there, post lurgy, for some beach and biking action.
Should also take a look at Yahiko before the September showdown.
Working toward Chokai at the moment, any tips?
Hey Adam,
Looking forward to the beach too! A few too many drinks last night seem to have cured the lurgy. 2 climbs of Yahiko today but easy on the gas as I don't want this virus biting back!
Chokai san. For the TT on Saturday, it's 11km of rolling road. You can probably do it all in the big ring if you have good legs. Aerobars are good. Some guys even turn up with disc wheels, skin suits and aerohelmets! Andrew and I talked about making some disc wheels out of some cornflake boxes!
The hill climb on Sunday has a rolling section in the middle of the climb. You want to be in the top group here and benefit from drafting. After the 1/2 distance finish the road is a hill climb proper. It's a nice winding road with little chance to see much up the road, so if you could break off here you would be "out of mind and out of site".
The other thing to remember is the heat - it's a scorcher!
Happy training and let's think of a time for summer training!
Adam - no long no see! Too bad about Utsukushi eh? Good luck for Chokai. Most of Andy's info is good except that the TT is 8km not 11. Definitely want the aerobars and for sure it is all big ring with just one sharp u-turn half way. I'm afraid I won't be there, but hopefully see you later in the summer.
Andy - 2 Yahiko's post lurgy! I tried to ride easy Saturday for 1.5 hours after my other errands but it hit me like a brick! Hope I can still ride Kodama-san's race this weekend.
