Yahiko Hill Climb race report

Result

じょんのびTIMEから13人が弥彦ヒルクライムに参加しました。皆さんお疲れさまでした。
去年のタイムより早かったですか？僕は30秒位早かったです。でもマサキさんは去年より5分くらい早かったそうですね。おめでとうございます！

レースは早くて、あんまり覚えていないです！スタートからペースが早かったです。サイクリングコンピュータを見たらに35キロくらいのスピードで登っていました。皆がドラフティングして実業団のロードレースみたいでした。

弥彦にはアンドリューさんと二人で交代しながら何回も登ったことがあります。でも30人位のグループと一緒に走るのは始めてでした。

トップで三人がペースセッティングをしていました(去年の二位の高橋さんと新潟のヒルクライム専門田崎さんとじょんのびTIMEのゲストメンバーシュウゾウさん)。僕はトップグループの後ろでドラフティングをしていました(！)。

その早いペースでトップグループから選手がどんどん落ちました。高橋さんが何回もミニアタックをしたのでついていけない人は落ちてしまいました。その後のペースには結構アップダウンがありました。そのレーススタイルはあまり見たことがないです。でも結果的にトップグループの人数が少なくなったということは効果があったということでしょうか。

僕とアンドリューさんはマイペースで走って、トップグループは8人位になりました。

レースコースの真ん中くらいで10%くらいのセクションがあります。2年前アンドリューさんが優勝した時は、ここでアタックしたそうですからアタックしたい選手にはいいポイントです。

そのポイントに来たとき「だれもアタックしないで…」と思いながら走りましたが、やっぱり高橋さんがアタックしました！トップグループは別れてしまい僕は後ろの半分に入ってしまいました。

そのあと二人、二人、二人、二人になりました。トップ二人は高橋さんと田崎さん、2番目にシュウゾウさんが入って、3番目は僕と新潟の海口さん、4番目にアンドリューさんが入っていました。

僕と海口さんは頑張って走って、シュウゾウさんのところまで行けそうだったけど結局無理でした。

僕は6位でゴールしました。すぐ後ろでアンドリューさんがゴールして7位でした。シュウゾウさんは4位でした。おめでとう！！

優勝は田崎さんでした。おめでとう！！とても嬉しいです。いつも大会前には田崎さんに「今日一緒に頑張っていいリザルトを出しましょう！」と言ってますが今まで僕がついていけたことはありませんでした。日曜日の飯田ロードレースでまた同じ事を言うつもりです。田崎さんもシュウゾウさんも参加するので一緒にがんばりましょう！

Well done to all 13 じょんのびTIME guys who took part in Sunday’s Yahiko Hill Climb. Did you manage to beat last year’s time? I knocked about 30 seconds off my time but I heard that Masaki san was faster by about 5 minutes. Well done!

The race went by so fast I don’t really remember it! The pace was high from the start. At one point I looked down at my cycling computer to see we were climbing at 35kmph! Everyone was drafting in what looked similar to a Jitsugyodan Road Race.

I’ve rode up there in rotation with Andrew countless times. However, this was the first time to do it in a group of about 30 riders.

At the front, 3 riders were setting the pace (last year’s runner up Takahashi san, Niigata’s hill climber Tazaki san and じょんのびTIME’s guest member Shuzo san). I was at the back of the lead group taking as much advantage of drafting as possible (!).

At such a high pace, riders were gradually falling off the back of the lead group.
Takahashi san made lots of small attacks. Riders who couldn’t follow were dropped off the back. As a consequence the pace was really up and down. I’ve not really seen this style of racing before. However, the number of riders in the lead group was gradually whittled down, so I guess it was effective.

Andrew and I rode at our own pace and soon the top group was down to about 8 riders.

In the middle of the course there is a section of about 10% grade. When Andrew won this race 2 years ago, I believe it was here that he made his attack. If any rider wants to attack, this is a good place to do it.

As we rode towards that section I remember thinking “Please nobody attack here…”. As might be expected, this is were Takahashi san made his move. The top group was split into two. I fell into the rear half.

After that the riders broke into four groups of two. The top two were Takahashi san and Tazaki san, the second pair include Shuzo san, the third pair was me and Umiguchi san from Niigata, Andrew was in the fourth pair.

I rode hard with Umiguchi san and I thought we were going to bridge the gap to Shuzo san. In the end we didn’t quite make it.

I came in 6th and soon behind me was Andrew in 7th. Shuzo san came in 4th. Well done!!

The winner was Tazaki san. Well done!! I’m really happy for him. Always before races I say to Tazaki san “Let’s work together today for a good result!” However, up until now I just haven’t been able to keep up with him. On Sunday we’ll go to the Iida Road Race and I’ll say the same thing to him again! Both Tazaki san and Shuzo san will take part so let’s work hard together!
