Kusatsu race report

じょんのびTIMEの皆さん、草津お疲れさまでした！楽しかったですね！色々なレースの中でも草津は最高ですね。参加者も2000人位と多いし、天気もよかったし、景色もきれいだったし、温泉も気持よかったし、BOON SUDS BEERもおいしかったね！

柏崎から“特攻野郎Aチームバン”に乗せてもらってで5人で行ってきました。オオヤさん、運転ありがとうじょんのび!早朝出発したので着いてからも十分時間がありました。前日にSUZUOTOさんが皆の分も受付してくれました。ありがとうじょんのび！

アップはハーフコースを2回登りました。ウォーミングアッププランを使い上手くアップできたと思います。

スタート前にパレードをしました。たくさんの人たちが応援してくれて嬉しかったじょんのび。

プロ選手が4人、チャンピオンクラスと一緒に走りました。(日本人の男性二人、アメリカ人の男性一人、女性一人)。フジタさん(96年オリンピック選手)もいました。
スタートからプロ選手がペースを上げました。30秒位の間にトップグループは12人位になってしまいました。一本の線で走って、僕は11番目で“オールアウト”で走りました。“やばいぞ！この線が切れそう！”と思いました。

やっぱり7番目位にいた選手の所で線が切れてしまいました。
一人では追い付けない！と思っていたら後ろから強そうな選手（塚野さん）が来ました。やった！電車乗ります！

彼は重いギアとローケーデンスで走りました。僕は軽いギアとハイケーデンスで走りました。スタイルは違ったけどペースはとても合いました。

そのままトップグループに追い付けそうだと思いましたが、あまりにハイペースで追い付けません。そうしている間にもトップから他の選手がどんどん落ちてきました。僕は185位のハートレートをキープしながら走りました。

トップグループから落ちてきた選手の中の一人(倉林さん)が僕たちのグループに入り三人になりました。
その時点ではプロ選手二人(日本人とアメリカ人)とフジタさんがトップグループを作っていましたが、フジタさんも落ちてしまいました。やっぱりプロ選手は早いですね。

倉林さんはリカバリーして、また元気になりました。彼は一人でペースアップしてフジタさんに追い付きました。また二人(僕と塚野さん)になりました。

去年のこのレースでは、ほとんど一人で走っていてゴール手前２キロで後ろからからきた二人に追い付かれました。そこで一人より二人で走った方がいいと思い、塚野さんとローテーションで登りました。

ゴール手前3キロ位の所で塚野さんが僕の後ろから落ちてしまいました。僕はそのまま一人でゴールしました。

プロ選手はノーカウントでしたから僕は３位でした。

なぜか去年のタイムより1分位遅かったです(2008の僕のタイムは今年なら優勝でした)。

僕の後ろからヨシオカさんが4位でゴールしました。またよろしくお願いします。

レースの後にビール、温泉とSUZUOTO SHOWをエンジョイしました。

じょんのびTIME guys, well done at Kusatsu! It was a great day out! Kusatsu must be one of the best events out there. About 2000 people took part, the weather was perfect, the scenery was fantastic, the onsen was great and the BOON SUDS BEERS went down really well!

From Kashiwazaki, 5 of us left in the A TEAM VAN. Ooya san, thank you so much for driving. We left Kashiwazaki early, leaving plenty of time to get ready for the race once we arrived. SUZUOTO sorted out our race numbers the day before, so that was a big help - thank you じょんのび！

I rode up the “half course” twice as a warm up. I used my warm up plan and did what I think was a really good warm up.

Before the start there was the parade through the town centre. It was great to have so many people lining the streets to cheer us on.

This year there were 4 pros racing alongside the “Champion” class (2 Japanaese guys and a guy and woman from America). Within the class itself, there was also Fujita san (who rode in the 96 Olympics).

The pros set a really high pace right from the gun. Within the first 30 seconds most had been left behind and a group of about 12 formed the lead group. The group was strung out in a line. I was sat in about 11th place and going “all out” just to hold on to the line. I thought, “this line’s gonna snap soon!”.

Sure enough it did. Around the 7th position in the line it snapped. There was no way I was going to bridge the widening gap alone. Just at that moment, a strong guy came around me (Tsukano san). Great! Jump on the train!

He was turning a big gear at a slow cadence. I was spinning a light gear at a high cadence. Our styles didn’t match but our pace was perfectly suited to one another.

I thought we had a chance of “getting back on” and bridging the gap to the top group.
But the top group just seemed to keep up its relentless pace. The lead group in front of us was getting smaller and smaller as riders fell off the back. I was trying to ride steady and hold my heart rate at the 185 mark.

One of the guys who fell off the front group ( Kurabayashi san) managed to get on the back of our group making us a threesome.

Up in front of us, 3 riders, the two pros (a Japanese guy and the American guy) and Fujita san remained. After a while, Fujita san also fell off the back. It just shows how strong the pros are.

Kurabayashi san seemed to recover some and moved in front of me. He raised the pace in attempt to catch up with Fujita san. I couldn’t go with him so we were a twosome once again (Tsukano san and me).

Last year when I rode Kusatsu, I did most of the climb on my own. About 2km before the finish line, 2 guys came up from behind and past me. This time, I thought it’s better to be in a pair than be alone so Tsukano san and I worked together taking turns to pull at the front.

About 3km from the finish line he fell away from me. I pressed on for the finish line alone.

The pros weren’t counted in the overall standings so I crossed the line in third.

I was surprised that my time was almost a minute slower than last year. (Last year’s time, would have been the winning time this year).

Behind me I made a new friend in Yoshioka san, who came in 4th. I hope to see you at more races!

After the race I enjoyed a load of beers, a great onsen and the special Suzuoto Show.
