Saturday was the Motegi 7h Enduro.

The third target in this year’s annual training plan.

In October I did 5 or 6 big 7 hour rides.

After that I put in some race simulation.

Finally I rested up well to be fresh on the start line.

The last race of the season...

  • strategy

I planned meticulously for this with my coach.

How to ride it? How to fuel it? What to do if nature calls!?

We thought it all through.

My coach even joined me at the event.

He kept me updated with how things were unfolding.

He provided the food and water.

And when I needed him most, he helped me get through the last 2.5 hours.

How many laps can you do in 7 hours?

Simple right!

The last winner of the event did 60 laps (that's an average of 7 mins a lap @ 40 kmph…..)

The 4 hour riders start at 9:00, the 7 hour starters start at 9:04.

1,400 riders on the road together.

Like Tokyo station in rush hour!

  • course

This is a racing car circuit so it’s an easy ride.

But with all the riders it becomes tricky at times.

  • bike

After being hit by a car 2 weeks ago, the bike is almost new.

The components are DURA ACE 7000.

And the wheels have been serviced by GS ASTUTO too.

Never had a bike as light as this. Must be the best set up yet!

I have a 53 × 12~25 gear set up.

(The climb was fine but in hindsight, 11~25 would have been better on the descent)

3,2,1 GO!

Race time!

A good position on the grid.

3,2,1 GO!

Fast from the gun!

The OPN pro riders set a blistering pace.

I can handle the climb. No problems.

But the descent is tough. The corners on the flat too.

Nervous in the bunch. I slip to the back. Too much space to the wheel in front. Braking too early...

This is definitely a weakness and something I need to work on.

After a gap opens it's a sprint to get back on.

Grab that wheel! Endless intervals!

"Can I keep this up for 7 hours?"

  • laps 1~10

The lead group gets smaller and smaller.

I'm sitting on the back.

The easiest place on the straights, the most difficult through the corners.

I know I need to move up. My coach urges me to do so too.

Eventually I get settled in the sweet spot about 15 to 20 riders back.

  • the wheels to follow

Checking out the other riders. Who is strong? Who can go the distance? Who accelerates steadily?

These are the wheels to follow.

The pros continue to set the pace. Eventually they'll peel off one by one.

  • fueling

I have a feeding and drinking strategy. I'm strict to follow it.

I get more food and drink from my coach on the 2.5h mark.

  • 4h rider finish

There are some 4h riders in the 7h lead group. I'm anticipating a change in pace after the 3.5h mark.

Sure enough it comes with 2 laps to go.

Chin on the stem time!

I can't follow the pace. But my coach is here! He sees the danger and drags me back up. Great assist!

  • 7h race on

With the 4 h riders gone the road is much wider.

35 laps done.

How will it go from here?

The 36 and 37 laps are fast but manageable....

  • here we go

The climb on the 38th lap. Fireworks. Explosions. Call it what you want.

The pace zooms up.

A small gap opens. Crap! I can't close it. Not far to the top of the climb. If I don't bridge by there...

Out of the back! Not just me. The wheels I was watching too.

Any chance of a chase group? Everyone's in tatters...

  • last 2.5h

What to do? Of course the pace drops. The 7 minute laps will turn into 8 minute laps.

The coach has come to support me. Throwing in the towel is not an option.

Luckily he's close at hand.

For the next 2.5 hours we share the road.

Physical support and mental support!

No thank yous can be big enough.

  • countdown

"Two hours, one and a half, one..."

That's all I can think of.

The whole body is aching!

Counting down the laps.

Counting down the climbs.

"Not far to go, not far to go...."

Gooooaaaaal!

6th place!

Happy with that!

280 km @ 39.5 kmph!

What a climax to the season!

I'll be back next year too!

While I was making myself dizzy going round in circles, my wife was entertaining the kids in the Motegi theme park. I'm lucky to have support like that.

Also lucky to have a coach. It's a collaborative relationship and I am indebted to him for his advice and support. We shared a few laughs on the road too.

GS Astuto provide the wheels. With ceramic bearings they spin all day day long. In events like this, where speed is everything and saving watts is a must, they can't be beat.

Astuto wheels and components

SIS provide the nutrition. I did 3 gels an hour, roughly 1 every 3 laps. That's 21 gels! Good flavors and the caffeine option can provide a boost at critical times.

Science in Sport nutrition

Finally Enosan who always takes care of things. "Leave it up to me!" he always says. 1 week after being taken out by a car I have a new bike on the road.....
