Last week was a taper for Gunma CSC on Sunday.

I did a combination of resting: to reduce fatigue.

And zone 3 riding: to maintain fitness.

Monday: rest
Tuesday: z3 (2h)
Wednesday: rest
Thursday: z3 (2h)
Friday: equipment check, z1 (1h)
Saturday: rest
Sunday: warm up, race

  • taper week: 10 h, 300 km, 500 TSS

I got to the start line feeling great!

Gunma CSC

The course: 17 laps, 102 km, of the hilly circuit

The plan: I plan to attack from the start. I've podiumed here a few times (2nd in the spring). I hope to go one better. Get away early and stay away!

The training: I've been simulating the effort of breaking away in training, 2.5 h of fast through and off with Yamada san each morning. Today, alone or with other riders, I want to burn the road up!

The bike: After training in the dark every morning it feels great to strip off the lights and saddle bag.

The wheels: The Astuto wheels are great on this course. Aero when off the front. But light enough on the climbs.

The tyres: The 25 mm Continental Gatorskin training tyres are replaced with 25mm Continental Competition Tubulars. Like swapping Doc Martens for ballet shoes!

The brakes: A new addition are the ImeZi brake pads I notice the stopping power with these. Great when you want to hold speed going into the corners until the last possible moment. It's a shame it's not raining!

The gearing: The gearing is also new. 53, 36 on the front. 11 to 28 on the back. I hope this is the best set up for attacking in the big ring on the short risers and the long descents.

The wear: 4 degrees on the start line, but it'll heat up! I put on all the clothes I have for the warm up. Like the Michelin man! Wait till the last possible moment to strip down to race mode. Bike races are won and lost with fashion mistakes!

The race:

Here we go then!

3,2,1 GO!

The first few kms are downhill. Neutralized by a lead motorbike.

Safely through the hairpins. The flag is dropped.

1 guy goes.

I watch the others. No reaction.

The escapee? He's not looking back. A good sign!

Go!

Out of the saddle! Bridge the gap! Give him the nod!

On the front. Through the rolling section. I drill it.

Into the climb. I signal him onto the front. A pure climber. Skinny and lanky. High cadence. But I can hold him.

Over the top. I'm faster downhill and through the rolling sections. I do long turns. Put him onto the front for the climbs. Not the perfect break away partner. But once committed...

On the climb on the second lap we are caught. It takes an effort not to get dropped as the group roars up the climb.

Into the third lap.

The descent before the hairpins. Not fully recovered. But Tojo san is slightly off the front.

We've talked about going together early.

Nip across. "Let's go! "

We get a gap.

But we are soon caught.

Up the climb. The pace here is always hard. In hindsight I lack a bit of top end climbing work.

First to the bottom. Last to the top.

The climbers show their legs. Half hearted attacks. No more obvious a place to attack than here.

Over the top. 3 laps in. 30 minutes on the clock. Like clockwork. The gels come out.

If one rider takes a gel or a drink. Everyone does!

Now's a chance!

Down the right. The fast downhill before the home straight. As hard as I can. Bouncing on the saddle. That's what the 53 × 11 is for!

Don't look back. Never look back.

Into the home straight. I hear a gear change. Flick him through.

He's a good one! More of a rouleur. We gel quickly.

On this course, if you get away for a lap, and don't overcook it, you have a chance.

Clear the 3rd lap.

Most of the 4th.

I pull us through the fast rolling section. Into the climb.

Suddenly two guys are on us. "The group's coming!"

A scramble. I can't match their pace. 3 up the road.

Stuck in no man's land.

The Shido team reel me in.

They are working for their ace. 3rd at Wajima last week. He's hovering near the back. Moving up only on the climbs. Looking souplesse. Biding his time.

Back in the group.

I look around for Tojo san. My only real ally. But he's gone.

From here it's a repitition of attacks. I try to go when nobody expects it. I can get away briefly. But I can't make it stick.

A marked man? A compliment. But frustrating non the less.

There are two common scenarios to win this race:

  • an attack on the last climb
  • a sprint finish

I won't win either. So I keep plugging away. Attacking. Following moves. Hoping something will stick.

At last the Shido ace makes his move on the home straight we two laps to go. He's been hiding in the bunch. But everyone knows he's the man to watch.

Action stations! The peleton is strung out. On the climb I'm caught behind a split.

Game over?

Ride my Sidis off to get back on.

The home straight. One lap to go. Those two scenarios.

The last chance saloon! The last throw of the dice!

Attack on the downhill. Through the hairpins. I have a gap.

But they're closing. Under the bridge. The short climb. If I can hold them off here...

But they're on me.

Just for kicks now.

I drag them to the base of the climb. Fireworks from behind as they all fly past me.

Game over?

Over the top. Still a biggish group. They start to look at each other. Somehow I get back on.

Sprint time!

In my power profile testing my sprint was on a par with Mary Poppins!

18 in the mix. I lock on to 2 Inoue Racing riders. A mini sprint train! Not bad either. As they scream home in 2nd and 3rd!

So I should be 4th?

Nah, 14th!

No regrets though. I rode really hard.

Relentlessly.

That's a good word.

Relentlessly.

Just one more race at Motegi on November 3rd.

Let's have it!
